Circa 1780–1920
I will tell you of a story that has lately come to pass, Of a cruel young farmer and his mare and her foal so fast. The mare was standing in the field, the foal was by her side, When the cruel farmer came along and made the foal to hide.
He whipped the mare with a heavy hand, and drove her from the door, The foal it cried out for its dam, but she would come no more. Oh, cruel was the farmer’s heart, so cold and full of spite, For he cared not for the mare nor foal that vanished in the night.
