Circa 1780–1850
I am a saucy ploughboy, all day I plough the land, And when the day is over I am the jolliest in the land. I’ve got a bonnie lassie who lives just down the way, She’s all the pretty girlies I see in the day.
Chorus: Oh the ploughboy he’s a jolly lad, With his coat of blue and his hands so glad, He’s the king of the fields and the queen of the hay, And he whistles and sings all the live-long day.
When the sun shines brightly and the corn is standing high, I’ll take my lassie gently, and on the fields we’ll lie, With the birds above us singing a tune so sweet, We’ll dance and we’ll frolic to the ploughboy’s beat.
